Hello! I sincerely hope that your child is as excited about their year in First grade as I am! Let me start by telling you a little about myself. I finished my education degree at Texas Woman’s University. This is year eighteen of my teaching career. I’ve taught Special Education classes, Kindergarten, First, Second, and Fourth grade. I’ve been a teacher with FISD for the past thirteen years, with the last seven of those years at Robertson Elementary.
Here are a few items to help our day go smoothly: Our lunch time is at 10:50. When you come to eat lunch with your First grader, you’ll sit with them at a visitor table. We want that time with your child to be special, so we don’t allow other students to come to the table with your child. Please do not give any children, who are not your own children, food that you’ve brought in to the school. Although it’s fun to share, you never know who has a food allergy, etc. Please note that the “peanut free” table is not a visitor table, unless your child happens to have a nut allergy. Please help the teachers reinforce cafeteria expectations by following routines. We do go to quiet time during the last ten minutes of lunch so that children are focused on finishing their lunch.
We will have a daily afternoon snack. Please send in a snack item that’s not too messy or has to be eaten with a spoon. Names need to be on snacks please.
If you’d like to volunteer at school or attend field trips, please go online to the FISD website and complete a background check. These have to be completed each school year. There will be times I could use some parent help with cutting, stapling, gluing projects, so please watch for emails.
If you have a change in your child’s transportation home from school, please email me by 2:00. If you do not get a reply back from me, it means that I’ve not had a chance to check email, so please call the school and they’ll get me the message. If you are having someone new pick up your child, please make sure that you’ve listed them with the front office. If that new person is not on the list, they will not be allowed to pick up your child until we’ve cleared it with you and the principals. Your child’s safety is top priority at all times.
When your child needs to take medication at school, please make sure you have talked with our school nurse before sending it in. If your child has any change in their health, please keep us informed so we can make sure your child’s day goes well. I am a severe asthmatic myself, so I can totally relate to those asthma and allergy issues.
Please check my blog or First grade website for class news and school information. Both will be linked to my email signature line. The quickest way to connect with me during the day will be email, but please know that if you leave me a voicemail, I will return that call during my conference time at the end of the day or right after school.
I will be sending home a Specials rotation schedule during the first week. My class will be split for Specials, meaning that my whole class will not go to the same Specials class each day. Students must bring or wear athletic shoes on days they have PE. Students will go to PE twice a week. Music, Art, and Computer Lab will be once a week. When I have our weekly Library schedule set up, I’ll let you know the day.
Curriculum Night is just around the corner! Be watching for more information to come through email and the Thursday folder. Curriculum Night is a night where you’ll learn about what we teach your child in First grade.
I look forward to getting to know you and your child this year. I truly believe that with parents and teachers as partners, student success is more easily achieved. If there’s anything I need to know about your child to teach them better, please let me know.
